Unit Theme: Science and Curiosity

What is this unit about?
This unit is a science fiction story set in outer space. It shows how curiosity, kindness, and observation can solve life-threatening problems — sometimes in the most unexpected ways. The story "Feathered Friend" by Arthur C. Clarke asks: Can a little canary save an entire space crew? The answer is yes — and it teaches us to value unconventional problem-solving and to appreciate the small, overlooked details of the world around us.

Text: Feathered Friend (by Arthur C. Clarke)

Characters:
Story Summary — Part I: Claribel Arrives
Story Summary — Part II: Claribel Saves the Crew
The Ending — A Happy Moral:
"Without Claribel, we should soon have been slightly dead."

Narrator's final message: "So now, if you visit any space station, don't be surprised if you hear an inexplicable snatch of birdsong. There's no need to be alarmed; on the contrary, in fact. It will mean that you're being doubly safeguarded, at practically no extra expense."

A canary in a space station = early warning system + pet + scientific curiosity = perfect value!

Grammar: Future Time References

7 Ways to Talk About the Future in English:
#Tense / FormWhen to UseExample from Clarke's story
1willFuture events, offers, certainty, promises"It will mean that you're being doubly safeguarded."
2Simple PresentFixed schedules, timetables"Our watch starts at 6 a.m." (regular schedule)
3Present ProgressivePersonal plans and fixed arrangements"We are hiding Claribel from the next VIP visit." (planned)
4going toIntentions, near-future plans (informal)"Sven is going to look for Claribel."
5Future Perfect (will have + past participle)Action completed by a future time"By tomorrow, they will have fixed the air purifier."
6Future Progressive (will + be + -ing)Action in progress at a future moment"This time tomorrow, Claribel will be doing loops again!"
7Future in the Past (would / was going to)Past reference to something then-future"Without Claribel, we should soon have been slightly dead." (was-future looking at past)

Vocabulary: Merged Words (Portmanteau Words)

What are merged words? Two words are combined to create a new word with a blended meaning.
Example: intercom = internal + communication (used in the story when Claribel's whistle is mistaken for the intercom)

✏️ Section 3: Worked Examples

Example 1: Why did the narrator think the musical whistle came from the intercom?

1
The narrator is sitting in his office, working through technical lists.
2
He suddenly hears a musical whistle beside his ear — an unexpected sound in a space station.
3
The intercom (internal communication system) is the usual source of unexpected audio sounds on the station — so he assumes an announcement is coming.
Answer: The narrator assumed the whistle came from the intercom because it is the standard source of audio announcements on the space station. He "waited for an announcement to follow." When no announcement came but instead "a long and involved pattern of melody," he looked up — and bumped his head — to find Claribel floating in the air beside him!

Example 2: How did Claribel show she had adapted to zero gravity?

1
A bird in normal gravity relies on wings constantly to stay airborne. In zero gravity, nothing falls.
2
Claribel floated "as motionless as a hummingbird — and with much less effort, for her wings were quietly folded along her sides."
3
She also performed "a curious kind of backward loop I'm sure no earthbound canary had ever managed."
Answer: Claribel showed she had adapted to zero gravity by floating motionlessly with wings folded (no effort needed) and by performing backward loops that would be impossible on Earth. The narrator notes: "It was quite obvious that she'd already learned how to operate in the absence of gravity, and did not believe in doing unnecessary work." She was perfectly comfortable in space!

Example 3: Future Time — Rewrite in the correct future form

Sentence: "The crew check the air purifier tomorrow." (use 'will')

1
Identify: "tomorrow" tells us this is a future event we want to express with certainty.
2
Formula for 'will': subject + will + base verb
3
"The crew" → "will check" the air purifier tomorrow.
Answer: "The crew will check the air purifier tomorrow." — Using 'will' shows a future event, offer, or certain plan. Other options: "The crew is going to check…" (intention/plan) or "The crew is checking…" (fixed arrangement).

Example 4: Vocabulary — What does "doubly safeguarded" mean?

1
"Doubly" = two times; twice the protection
2
"Safeguarded" = protected from harm or danger
3
Context: The narrator says that having a canary ON TOP OF the electronic alarm system means you have two warning systems instead of one.
Answer: "Doubly safeguarded" means protected twice over — first by the electronic alarm circuit, and second by the canary's natural sensitivity to bad air. Since the alarm circuit had failed in the story, the canary was the backup. The narrator is saying: space stations with canaries are twice as safe as those without!

Example 5: Merged word — Create a merged word from "spoon" + "fork"

1
"spoon" + "fork" → take the beginning of "spoon" (sp-) and the end of "fork" (-ork)
2
Combined: sp + ork = spork
3
Meaning: A utensil that functions as both a spoon and a fork — common in fast food packaging!
Answer: spoon + fork = SPORK — a single utensil with a spoon bowl and fork tines. It is a portmanteau word (merged word). Like "brunch" (breakfast + lunch), a spork blends both the name and the function of two things into one.

What would you do if you were the narrator and Claribel fainted?
Create your own merged word! Word 1: _______ + Word 2: _______ = New word: _______

Answer Key

1. Sven brought Claribel aboard partly out of sheer scientific curiosity — he wanted to see how a bird would fly and operate when it had no weight but could still use its wings.
2. Claribel adapted by floating motionlessly with wings folded (no effort needed), and she performed backward loops impossible for Earth canaries. She "did not believe in doing unnecessary work."
3. The crew had nagging headaches, felt sluggish, breakfast was unusually quiet, and one seat was vacant. These were all signs of oxygen depletion — but no one connected them until Claribel fainted.
4. The air purifier froze during a rare Earth shadow eclipse. The second alarm circuit had not been connected yet, so the single working alarm failed to go off. The entire electronic safety system had failed.
5. "Doubly safeguarded" = protected by TWO systems — the electronic alarm AND the canary. The narrator recommends all space stations keep canaries as backup warning systems, costing "practically no extra expense."

Click/tap a card to flip and see the answer!

Who wrote "Feathered Friend" and what kind of story is it?
Arthur C. Clarke wrote it. It is a science fiction story set on a space station in Earth's orbit.
Who is Claribel and why was she on the space station?
Claribel is a small yellow canary smuggled aboard by Sven Olsen from Earth, partly out of "sheer scientific curiosity" to see how a bird would behave in zero gravity.
How did Claribel accidentally save the crew's lives?
She fainted from bad air before the humans felt its full effects. This reminded the narrator that miners used canaries to detect dangerous gas. The air purifier had frozen — alarm circuits had failed.
What does "Without Claribel, we should soon have been slightly dead" mean?
This is a humorous understatement. "Slightly dead" is funny — you can't be "slightly" dead! Clarke is saying they would have died without the canary's early warning about the bad air.
What is a portmanteau/merged word? Give two examples.
A merged word combines two words into one new word. Examples: brunch (breakfast + lunch), smog (smoke + fog), sitcom (situation + comedy), webinar (web + seminar).
When do we use 'going to' for future time?
We use 'going to' (present progressive of 'go') for intentions and near-future plans, especially in informal speech. Example: "Sven is going to look for Claribel." It is more informal than 'will'.
What does "doubly safeguarded" mean in the story's ending?
Protected by two systems: the electronic alarm circuit AND a canary. If the alarm fails (as it did in the story), the canary still warns you. Two layers of protection = doubly safeguarded.
Name two words with silent letters from this unit.
ballet (silent t, pronounced "ba-lay"), whistle (silent t, pronounced "wi-sl"), psychologist (silent p), receipt (silent p), island (silent s), wreck (silent w).
