📋 What is Inside?

📝 Section 1 — Classroom Notes

🌎 Real-World Connection: Imagine bacteria that double every hour. After 10 hours you have 2¹⁰ = 1,024 bacteria — writing 1,024 is easy, but after 30 hours you would need to write 1,073,741,824. Scientists use exponents (2³⁰) to keep things manageable. Computer memory (KB, MB, GB) also uses powers of 2. Exponents are the shorthand for repeated multiplication!

Picture 2: Laws of Exponents Chart

Three Key Laws of Exponents 1. Product Rule aᵐ × aⁿ = aᵐ⁺ⁿ Same base? ADD powers. 3² × 3³ = 3⁵ = 243 + 2. Quotient Rule aᵐ ÷ aⁿ = aᵐ⁻ⁿ Same base? SUBTRACT powers. 5⁴ ÷ 5¹ = 5³ = 125 − 3. Power of a Power (aᵐ)ⁿ = aᵐ×ⁿ Power on a power? MULTIPLY. (2³)² = 2⁶ = 64 ×

Remember: Product = Add, Quotient = Subtract, Power of Power = Multiply.

Picture 3: Negative Exponents on Number Line

Powers of 10: Big and Small 10⁻³ 0.001 10⁻² 0.01 10⁻¹ 0.1 10⁰ 1 10¹ 10 10² 100 10³ 1000 ← Smaller (fractions) Bigger (whole) → Each step RIGHT = × 10. Each step LEFT = ÷ 10.

Moving right multiplies by 10. Moving left divides by 10. Negative powers give fractions.

Picture 4: Standard Form for Large Numbers

Writing Big Numbers in Standard Form 53,000 → 5.3 × 10⁴ Move decimal 4 places left 4 moves 7,200,000 → 7.2 × 10⁶ Move decimal 6 places left 6 moves 150,000,000 → 1.5 × 10⁸ Move decimal 8 places left 8 moves

Standard form: move decimal left until one digit remains. Count the moves = power of 10.

Picture 5: Small Numbers with Negative Powers

Tiny Numbers Use Negative Powers 0.001 → 1 × 10⁻³ Move decimal 3 places right −3 power 0.00056 → 5.6 × 10⁻⁴ Move decimal 4 places right −4 power 0.0000009 → 9 × 10⁻⁷ Move decimal 7 places right −7 power

For small numbers: move decimal right. Count moves = negative power of 10.

✏️ Section 3 — Worked Examples

Example 1: Simplify Using Exponent Laws

Question: Simplify (3⁴ × 3⁻²) ÷ 3⁵.

1 First solve the top: 3⁴ × 3⁻².
2 Use Product Rule: add the powers.
3 4 + (−2) = 2. So we get 3².
4 Now divide: 3² ÷ 3⁵.
5 Use Quotient Rule: subtract the powers.
6 2 − 5 = −3. So we get 3⁻³.
7 3⁻³ = 1 / 3³ = 1 / 27.
(3⁴ × 3⁻²) ÷ 3⁵ = 1/27

Product = Add, Quotient = Subtract ✓

Example 2: Express in Standard Form

Question: Write 0.000045 in standard form.

1 Look at 0.000045. It is a small number.
2 Move the decimal right until one digit is before the point.
3 0.000045 → 00004.5. We moved 5 places.
4 We get 4.5. The power is −5.
5 Standard form = 4.5 × 10⁻⁵.
0.000045 = 4.5 × 10⁻⁵

Small number → negative power ✓

Example 3: Mixed Exponent Problem

Question: Find the value of (2⁻³ × 5²) ÷ (10⁻¹).

1 Find 2⁻³ = 1/2³ = 1/8.
2 Find 5² = 25.
3 Top = 1/8 × 25 = 25/8.
4 Find 10⁻¹ = 1/10 = 0.1.
5 Divide: 25/8 ÷ 1/10 = 25/8 × 10/1.
6 = 250/8 = 31.25.
(2⁻³ × 5²) ÷ (10⁻¹) = 31.25

Divide by a fraction = multiply by its flip ✓

✅ Detailed Solutions — Section 5 Handout

A. Fill in the Blanks — Answers

1. In 4³, the base is 4 and the exponent is 3.
2. aᵐ × aⁿ = a to the power m + n. (Product rule: same base, add powers.)
3. Any number to the power zero equals 1. (e.g. 5⁰ = 1, 100⁰ = 1.)
4. 2⁻⁴ = 1 divided by 16. (2⁻⁴ = 1/2⁴ = 1/16.)
5. 0.0003 in standard form is 3 × 10 to the power −4. (0.0003 = 3/10000 = 3 × 10⁻⁴.)

B. True or False — Answers

1. 5⁰ = 0. — False. Any number to the power 0 = 1. So 5⁰ = 1.
2. 2³ × 2² = 2⁶. — False. Product rule: 2³ × 2² = 2³⁺² = 2⁵ = 32.
3. (3²)³ = 3⁵. — False. Power of power: (3²)³ = 3²×³ = 3⁶ = 729.
4. 10⁻² = 0.01. — True. 10⁻² = 1/10² = 1/100 = 0.01. ✓
5. 7¹ = 7. — True. Any number to the power 1 equals itself. ✓

C1. Simplify: 2⁵ × 2⁻³ ÷ 2²
