📋 What is Inside?

📝 Section 1 — Classroom Notes

🌎 Real-World Connection: Look around your classroom — the door, the window, the whiteboard, the floor tiles. Almost every flat surface is a quadrilateral. Architects use parallelograms to design strong roofs. Engineers use trapeziums in bridge design. Even the kite you fly on a windy day is a kite-shaped quadrilateral! Understanding these shapes helps in construction, art, and engineering.

Picture 1: Quadrilateral Family Tree

Quadrilateral Trapezium Parallelogram Kite Rectangle Rhombus Square 1 pair parallel 2 pairs adj. equal All angles 90° All sides equal Rectangle + Rhombus = Square All sides equal AND all angles 90°

The family tree shows how shapes are related. Square is the most special quadrilateral.

Picture 2: Parallelogram with Properties

Properties of a Parallelogram A B C D α β α β O (midpoint) AB = DC, AD = BC | α = α, β = β (opposite angles equal) Diagonals bisect each other at O | α + β = 180°

Opposite sides are equal and parallel. Opposite angles are equal. Diagonals bisect each other.

Picture 3: Rectangle vs Square vs Rhombus

Rectangle 90° at all corners b a Square All sides = a 90° Rhombus All sides = a 90° Angles: all 90° Sides: opposite equal Diag: equal, bisect Angles: all 90° Sides: all equal Diag: equal, bisect at 90° Angles: opposite equal Sides: all equal Diag: bisect at 90°

Rectangle has equal angles. Rhombus has equal sides. Square has both!

Picture 4: Trapezium and Kite

Trapezium A B C D ▶▶ ▶▶ AB ∥ DC One pair of parallel sides Co-interior angles add to 180° Kite P Q R S | | || || Two pairs of adjacent equal sides Diagonals cross at 90°

Trapezium has one pair of parallel sides. Kite has two pairs of adjacent equal sides.

Picture 5: Angle Sum Property (360°)

Angle Sum = 360° A B C D 80° 110° 85° 85° Triangle 1 Triangle 2 Triangle 1 = 180° + Triangle 2 = 180° Total = 180° + 180° = 360°

A diagonal splits any quadrilateral into 2 triangles. Each triangle has 180°. So total = 360°.

✏️ Section 3 — Worked Examples

Example 1: Find the Missing Angle

Question: Three angles of a quadrilateral are 75°, 110°, and 85°. Find the fourth angle.

1 All four angles add up to 360°.
2 Add the three known angles together.
3 75 + 110 + 85 = 270°.
4 Fourth angle = 360 − 270.
5 Fourth angle = 90°.
The fourth angle = 90°

Check: 75 + 110 + 85 + 90 = 360 ✓

Example 2: Angles of a Parallelogram

Question: PQRS is a parallelogram. Angle P = 65°. Find all other angles.

1 In a parallelogram, opposite angles are equal.
2 Angle P = 65°, so angle R = 65°.
3 Adjacent angles add to 180°.
4 Angle Q = 180 − 65 = 115°.
5 Angle S = angle Q = 115°.
P = 65°, Q = 115°, R = 65°, S = 115°

Check: 65 + 115 + 65 + 115 = 360 ✓

Example 3: Side of a Rhombus from Diagonals

Question: Diagonals of a rhombus are 12 cm and 16 cm. Find the side.

1 Diagonals of a rhombus bisect at 90°.
2 Half of 12 = 6 cm.
3 Half of 16 = 8 cm.
4 This makes a right triangle: legs 6 and 8.
5 Side² = 6² + 8² = 36 + 64 = 100.
6 Side = √100 = 10 cm.
Each side of the rhombus = 10 cm

Pythagoras: 6² + 8² = 10² ✓

✅ Detailed Solutions — Section 5 Handout

A. Fill in the Blanks — Answers

1. The sum of all angles in a quadrilateral is 360°.
2. A parallelogram has 2 pairs of parallel sides.
3. In a rectangle, all angles are 90°.
4. A rhombus has all four sides equal.
5. A trapezium has 1 pair of parallel sides.

B. True or False — Answers

1. A square is a special rectangle. — True. (Square has all 90° angles like a rectangle, plus all sides equal. ✓)
2. Diagonals of a rectangle bisect at 90°. — False. (Diagonals of a rectangle are equal and bisect each other but do not meet at 90°. That is the rhombus/square.)
3. Opposite angles of a parallelogram are equal. — True. (Key property of parallelograms. ✓)
4. A kite has two pairs of parallel sides. — False. (A kite has two pairs of adjacent equal sides, but no parallel sides.)
5. Every square is a rhombus. — True. (A square has all sides equal, so it satisfies the definition of a rhombus. ✓)

C1. Three angles are 90°, 95°, and 70°. Find the fourth angle.

1 The sum of all four angles of a quadrilateral = 360°.
2 Sum of known angles: 90 + 95 + 70 = 255°.
3 Fourth angle = 360 − 255 = 105°.
4 Check: 90 + 95 + 70 + 105 = 360°. ✓
Fourth angle = 105°

C2. Parallelogram ABCD, angle A = 72°. Find angles B, C, D.

1 In a parallelogram, opposite angles are equal.
2 Angle A = 72°, so angle C = 72°. (Opposite to A.)
3 Adjacent angles add to 180° (co-interior angles).
4 Angle B = 180 − 72 = 108°.
5 Angle D = angle B = 108°. (Opposite to B.)
6 Check: 72 + 108 + 72 + 108 = 360°. ✓
Angle A = 72°, B = 108°, C = 72°, D = 108°

D. Match the Columns — Answers

1. Rectangle → c. All angles 90°, diag. equal
2. Rhombus → a. All sides equal, diag. at 90°
3. Trapezium → b. One pair of parallel sides
4. Kite → d. Two pairs of adjacent equal sides

🃏 Section 6 — Revision Flashcards

👉

🔷

What do all angles of a quadrilateral add up to?

360°

Because 2 triangles fit inside = 180 + 180.

🔎

What are the properties of a parallelogram?

Opposite sides equal and parallel. Opposite angles equal. Diagonals bisect each other.

📈

How is a rectangle different from a parallelogram?

A rectangle has all angles = 90° and its diagonals are equal in length.

🔗

What makes a square so special?

All sides equal, all angles 90°. Diagonals are equal and bisect at 90°. It is both a rectangle and a rhombus!

❓

How do diagonals behave in a rhombus?

Diagonals bisect each other at 90°. They are not equal. Each diagonal bisects a pair of opposite angles.

💡

What is a trapezium?

A quadrilateral with exactly one pair of parallel sides. The parallel sides are called bases.

🔧

What is a kite?

A quadrilateral with two pairs of adjacent equal sides. Its diagonals cross at 90°.

🎯

How do you find a missing angle in a quadrilateral?

Add the three known angles. Subtract from 360°.

Missing angle = 360 − (sum of others).
